VEHICLE RECYCLING - SCRAPPING
As of September 2005 the company concluded an agreement with the body that oversees the recycling of vehicles in Greece (Alternative Vehicle Management Greece [EDOE]) and it operates in accordance with the European standards and with the specifications of ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004.
Specifically, old vehicles that arrive at the company's facilities are subject to the following procedure:
- Issuance of an Acknowledgement of Receipt to the last owner and mailing of the Certificate of Destruction of the vehicle to his/her address, after approximately 10 days, when the vehicle has been permanently deleted from the relevant records of the Directorate of Transport (the company undertakes to perform the deletion procedure free of charge to save the owner the trouble).
- Decontamination of the old vehicle, namely, removal of all contaminants that can harm the environment. Removal of the tyres, battery, lubricants, anti-freeze, catalytic converter, windows and windscreens, brake fluid and fuel from the frame of the vehicle. The materials resulting from the decontamination process of the end-of-life vehicles are handed over to the competent bodies and transported to licensed facilities to undergo the required processing, so that they too can be recycled into new products.
- Lastly, the frame of the car, now free from all contaminants, is taken to the compression chamber of the vehicle shredder (shear) to be cut in a specific way into pieces of approximate length 10-15 cm. Subsequently these pieces are transported to the grinder mill (shredder) where they are then ground into smaller pieces, cleaned with the aid of magnetic drums and separated in an inductive divider into ferrous and non-ferrous clean metals.
The resulting ferrous scrap is a valuable ''secondary'' raw material for the steel industry to which it is sold for smelting and for construction of iron-concrete, meshes and other steel products.
The resulting non-ferrous scrap (copper, aluminium, brass, lead, etc.) is resold to foundries, where it is moulded for the production of new products from the corresponding metals.
